The shooting was reported at 9:16 p.m. on the eastbound side of Highway 80, just west of state Highway 4. Officers arrived on scene and confirmed that a shooting did occur at that location.
Authorities said the male driver was shot in the leg. He was transported to a local hospital. The windows of another car were also shattered. No other injuries were reported.
The suspect allegedly drove off in a black Chevrolet El Camino with tinted windows, CHP said.
A Sig-alert was issued for eastbound Highway 80 at 9:37 p.m. due to police activity. Two eastbound lanes have been closed just west of Highway 4 and four lanes have been closed at Pinole Valley Road.
Traffic in the area remained heavy and drivers are advised to expect delays, according to the CHP.
Tuesday night's shooting is the latest in a series of roughly 20 that have occurred on East Bay highways since November.
