GREENFIELD, Ind. (KGO) -- Graduating high school seniors usually can't wait to get their hands on that diploma. One graduate in Indiana waited a little bit longer -- try seven decades.
Walter Worland finally received his diploma over the weekend at Greenfield Central High School.
The 91-year-old didn't graduate with his class more than 70 years ago because he enlisted instead, and went off to fight in World War II.
"Education wasn't important," he said. "It was survival at that time."
Even though he never completed his education until now, Walter has dedicated his life to helping local schools and the community.
At age 91, Walter still logs volunteer hours with Meals on Wheels, the American Red Cross, and the Greenfield Rotary Club.
The former Greenfield city councilman also funds scholarships for students at four local high schools and he's credited with helping to bring a new library to Greenfield Central Junior High.
"I've been very fortunate," he said. "So I have a lot to share. I think there's so many people out there that could share more."
After serving his community and country, Walter says this is something that's been on his bucket list. It's an accomplishment that, after 72 years, he can now cross off.
