Report alleges Ghost Ship fire started next door
A report from the lawyers of Ghost Ship founder Derick Ion Almena says that the fire that killed 36 people didn't start in the warehouse.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A new report on December's Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse fire is raising more question about the origin of the deadly flames.

The report comes from the lawyers of Ghost Ship warehouse manager Derick Ion Almena. It says the fire started in a building next door and not in the warehouse. The report also blames inadequate electrical wiring.

This is not the official fire investigation report. The Oakland fire department is still working on its final version based on ATF findings.

Almena's lawyers say the report should absolve Almena of criminal liability, but so far they have not identified the author of the report.

Almena's attorney, Tony Serra, has not made himself available to answer any of ABC7 News' questions about the findings.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office is still conducting a criminal investigation, issuing this statement: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Oakland Fire Department are collaborating on a comprehensive investigation of the 31st Avenue warehouse fire. The investigation will yield a report that addresses the cause and origin of the fire. That report will be forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office as part of the ongoing criminal investigation. It's premature to speculate about the origin of the fire until all investigations are complete.
