Video shows moments before SFPD shoots armed suspect at Powell Street BART station

SAN FRANCISCO -- An armed man who was being pursued by police was shot when he ran into the Powell Street BART station, police said Friday.

The station was closed for about an hour and trains ran through without stopping during the incident, BART spokesperson Jim Allison said.

Officers assigned to clearing homeless tents in the area of Jessie Street and 6th Street in the South of Market neighborhood saw a man with a gun inside a vehicle about 10:18 a.m., police said.

When officers approached the vehicle, the armed man fled into a retail store in an attempt to escape, then ran down into the Powell Street BART station, police said.

"Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect," police said in a press release. "During the encounter, an officer involved shooting occurred. The armed male suspect was struck by gunfire."

The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The Police Department said it will hold a town hall meeting about the shooting within 10 days.
