SF expected to start intradermal injections, receive 1,600 vials from latest federal supply

For the first time, San Francisco is adopting a new injection method to stretch very vial of the Monkeypox vaccine---getting five doses out of each vial. The city will start intradermal injections---which injects the vaccine between layers of the skin instead of a full dose.

It's unknown when that method will start.

The city's health department recently announced it will be receiving 1,600 vials of the Monkeypox vaccine from the latest federal supply.

San Francisco is reporting more than 600 cases. Alameda and Santa Clara counties have more than 100 cases each.

The clinic is open for walk-ins from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this week as long as supply lasts.

8 p.m.
Santa Clara Co. now administering up to 5x more monkeypox vaccines
Health officials in Santa Clara County say they are now vaccinating more people who are at the highest risk of getting monkeypox. It's because of changes in rules by the Food and Drug Administration that will allow them to stretch out their supply.

Before, the vaccines were injected subcutaneously, or under the skin. Now they're being injected intradermally, just under the top layer of skin.

County health experts say this method helps stretch the vaccine supply.

"Only 1/5 as much of the dose is used for that intradermal injection compared to the full dose that was used before," said Dr. Jennifer Tong, associate chief medical officer Santa Clara Valley Medical Center of Santa Clara County. "This was approved by the FDA based on a study that was done a few years ago."

6 p.m.
SF monkeypox vaccine clinic expanded to meet demand
The San Francisco Department of Public Health announced Monday that they will expand the hours of their walk-in monkeypox vaccine clinic by doubling those hours.

Instead of being open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., their clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital will stay open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, as long as supply allows.
"We are expanding hours of this vaccine clinic, we are now going to be able to double the amount of time that we're offering vaccine at this clinic," said San Francisco Director of Health Dr. Grant Colfax.

This comes as San Francisco's total case number of 563 makes up more than a quarter of California's total case count of nearly 2,000.

Colfax says even though the lines lacing around the hospital have started to die down, their work is far from over as demand remains high.

They're now averaging 600 to 700 vaccines a day.

The lines weren't so long over the weekend at SF General compared to previous clinics. The hospital says it has streamlined the registration process.

It reopens at 8 a.m.

Zuckerberg SF General vaccine clinic reopens with shorter lines as Bay Area counties prepare for new way to administer shots

The vaccine clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General reopened at 8 a.m. for walk-ins. On Wednesday, they gave out more than 700 doses -- and the lines were much shorter.

Many Bay Area counties are preparing to change the way the vaccine is administered.

ABC7 News told you earlier this week about the new recommendation from the FDA to give people one-fifth of a full dose. The smaller shot has to be administered in a different way, between layers of skin, rather than under the skin. That requires special training.

Marin County Public Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis was among those from across the state who took part in a call to discuss the change. He said, "The main topic of that meeting was how this might roll out across the state. This is going to be a gamer changer for us. If we really can use five doses per vial instead of one."

One concern - health officials say they don't know if the vaccine will work as well. It will be at least several days until most counties make the switch.

California holds special hearing to address monkeypox outbreak

On Tuesday afternoon, State Senator Scott Wiener held a special hearing about the monkeypox outbreak in California. He thinks the state can continue to do more to address the growing crisis. There are now over 500 cases just in San Francisco alone. Some of the things Wiener is asking for include: His team has submitted a $38.5 million emergency state budget request to help support local public health departments. He's also asking for regulatory changes that would allow county and community clinics to use COVID funding to help them address the monkeypox crisis locally. Specifically, they could then use COVID funding for things like monkeypox testing, outreach, etc. And, of course, he's calling on federal partners to manufacture and send more vaccines to the state of California as soon as possible.

Sen. Wiener calls for monkeypox state of emergency
Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released a statement calling on San Francisco and California to declare a state of emergency due to the growing monkeypox outbreak:

"Monkeypox is a public health crisis, and we need to treat it as such. In San Francisco alone, we have 222 cases - one of the highest rates in the United States. Given that spread and that Monkeypox is now being detected in our sewage, we know that cases are high and will continue to grow. Monkeypox is painful and isolating, and no one should have to experience it.

"Unfortunately, because our federal government failed to act quickly to acquire the vaccine supplies needed to prevent an outbreak, we are now in a public health emergency that is only going to escalate. Given that gay and bi men and trans people are the most impacted, it's sadly becoming clear that we are being left behind once again.

"That's why I'm calling on San Francisco and California to declare a State of Emergency. State of Emergency declarations will create significant flexibility around testing, contracting for services, and administration of vaccinations. It will allow us to use all the resources in our power to contain the outbreak. Right now, we don't have enough vaccines or testing, and we need flexibility to expand access to both. We have no time to waste: this is happening now, it's serious, and we need to do everything we can to contain it."

The head of New York City's health department wants the World Health Organization to rename the virus. He says this would avoid "stigmatizing" patients who may be reluctant to seek care.

And Wednesday, a vaccine clinic will open at noon at Steamworks in Berkeley. There will be 300 doses given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Another is planned next Wednesday, August 3.
