Top 2007 Google searches

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA

This is part of Google's Zeitgeist Team: zeitgeist means spirit of the times.

It's the name for Google's year end pulse of the world by looking at billions of search queries.

"I've always liked it because it basically shows the trends of what everyone is doing for the last year," said Dave Carlsson from Google Zeitgeist Team.

We recruited some Google employees to get a glimpse of some of those trends.

Here's this years top five fastest rising global searches.

Apple's iPhone was announced in January, released in June and was time's invention of the year.

Badoo? Yes, it's one of the newest social networking sites boasting more than 12 million users.

Facebook launched its online community in 2004 and is still growing in popularity.

Dailymotion is a video sharing site focused on creative content and animation.

Ah yes, Webkinz, those stuffed animals that come with a secret code allowing kids to play with their pets in a virtual world.

The list of the fastest rising searches in the U.S. is similar to the global list with a little bit more of an entertainment bent.

Apple's iPhone was also number one. Webkinz number two. Number three goes to TMZ, the celebrity gossip blog that vaulted onto the world stage this year.

The movie transformers grabbed the number four spot and the popular video sharing site YouTube rounded out the top five fastest risers in the U.S.

All in all, Google executives say the trend is obvious and all about being connected.

"It's interesting because we saw those social networking sites in 2006 and we thought that was the peak and this year we see they continue to rise," said Google Vice President of search and user experience Marissa Mayer.
