Shortly before 11:30 a.m., a housekeeper on the 10th or 11th floor of Joe West Hall smelled smoke and pulled the fire alarm, spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said.

Firefighters responded and evacuated the building, which houses 500 residents. After going from room to room to investigate, crews found a burning piece of paper, Harris said.

The fire department dispatched a "level two" high-rise response, bringing in large numbers of personnel and apparatus because of the size of the building, Capt. Scott Kouns said.

The origin of the burning paper is being investigated, Lopes said. Students were allowed back into the building at about 1 p.m.
