The fire started around 7:20 p.m. Thursday evening and could be seen for miles. Albany firefighters had to quickly call in Richmond and El Cerrito firefighters for help. They got the blaze out in about 30 minutes.

One firefighter told ABC7 he thinks the down economy is one reason why the fire got so big. Since there has not been many construction projects, there was a lot more lumber at the yard than usual. The firefighter said he knew that because they happened to inspect the place fairly recently.

Lumber Baron is located at 500 Cleveland Avenue, near Highway 580 and 80. Therefore, a lot of motorists saw the fire and that's where the first calls came in from.

Firefighters never went into the facility. They took a defensive stance from the beginning because it was so big.

There were no injuries to report and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
