Flint leaders: Threats of violence won't deter downtown events

FLINT In a matter of weeks, there will be two big events in Genesee County with Back to the Bricks and the Crim Festival of Races all poised to call downtown Flint home.

Organizers say the serial slasher won't stop the community from coming together. From satellite trucks to live feeds, national media attention is centering in on Flint.

The city has overcome adversity countless times, and Mayor Dayne Walling says this will be no different. He won't allow the serial slasher to ruin Flint's growing image.

"The Durant will be opening up its doors, people will be moving in to the Diplomat Pharmacy, so there are positive things happening," he said. "We have to work through this and work together."

Neither will Back to the Bricks founder Al Hatch.

"We are attracting a national audience in a positive way," he said.

In one week, thousands from across the country will celebrate the city's treasured past at the sixth annual Back to the Bricks car show and one week later, the 34th running of the Crim Festival of Races. The only problem Hatch forsees is crowd control.

"Everything in downtown Flint is booked solid," he said. "I don't think this will have any impact on us. We have hadn't any cancellations."

While downtown focuses its attention on boosting Flint's economy and relishing in tradition, a north-side business says the community must stay vigilant.

"It's pretty bad that you can't help people anymore," said Matthew Jennings. "Just be cautious before you help someone."

Jung Do Martial Art Academy teaches self defense classes. Master Connie Brown says in response to the violence, more people are interested in learning how to protect themselves.

"I've gotten some calls where they want some self-defense classes in the neighborhood block groups," she said.

One more positive note to pass along: Hatch confirmed Shirley Williams from "Laverne & Shirley" and "American Graffiti" costar start Paul LaMet will appear next week at Back to the Bricks.
