High court rules on your right to sue

Do companies have the right to deny you Constitutional rights?

The U.S. Supreme Court took up that question Tuesday in a California case involving cell phone contracts.

It all started when a couple filed a class action lawsuit against AT&T.

The couple said the phone company advertised a free cell phone with wireless service, then charged $30 for phone fees and tax.

AT&T said the lawsuit had to be thrown out because the cell phone contract says "all disputes go to arbitration."

Consumer advocates say companies should not be able to block your right to sue by putting in an arbitration clause in a contract.

If the high court rules in AT&T's favor, consumer advocates say it could open the way for more companies to stifle your rights to file class action lawsuits too.
