Whipping winds cause most trouble for plow trucks Wednesday

SAGINAW COUNTY By Wednesday evening, the weather had calmed down a bit from earlier but not much. Mix in the bitter cold and that's a recipe for some slow-going snow removal.

On back roads in Birch Run and Bridgeport townships, in some parts the actual streets were barely recognizable. Cars and trucks were moving very slowly. Drivers with four-wheel-drive vehicles traveling on the powder covered roads were in luck.

Side streets across the region were barely passable as well. Plow trucks concentrated soley on the main thoroughfares, but even that posed some challenges.

The Saginaw County Road Commission says its truck drivers were slowed down by the wind. It kicked up so much that it was forcing plows to clean up roads not once, but twice.

The road commission's full crew was out till 5 a.m. Half of that crew will be on till 7:30 p.m.

A small group of plows will be out through the night to help with emergency services.

Starting at 3 a.m., half of the fleet will be back on the road. Then starting at 5 a.m. there will be full service with a little more than 40 trucks back out plowing, hoping to begin work on the local roads.
