Court appearance for man accused of shooting girl

HOUSTON

Derrick Lopez is charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury. Police say Lopez got into a fight with the girl's father at a southeast Houston restaurant early Sunday morning. Police say Lopez confessed to opening fire on the girl's father while he was picking up his kids at a home on Hollock an hour later.

The girl, Desiree Mendez, is in stable condition, but does not have feeling below her knees.

No one else was injured in the shooting.
