SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco's Comedy Day will have a somber start this year.

Organizers of the annual event plan to hold a special tribute to comedian Robin Williams at the start of the 5.5 hour comedy festival.

Williams has a long history with the event. He performed in the very first Comedy Day 34 years ago and has stopped by for surprise performances over the years.

"It was always electric whenever he hit the stage. You could just feel the love and the energy coming from the audience. It was something special," Comedy Day organizer Debi Durst said.

Comedy Day will be held on September 14 at Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park and is free.

Some of the headliners will include Will Durst, Marga Gomez and Margaret Cho.
