Injured San Jose climber rescued from Mount Shasta after sliding 500 feet, crawling down mountain
SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- A San Jose climber was airlifted to a hospital after crawling to safety on Mount Shasta following an injury during his descent, according to forest officials.
Officials said the man successfully summited the mountain around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, but his phone died and he was injured on the way down the Avalanche Gulch route.
The climber said he tried to glissade down the mountain, but he lost control and slid about 500 feet, injuring his feet. Because of swelling, he removed his boots and crawled through Avalanche Gulch overnight until he reached a cabin.

On Friday, the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office and other teams began a search for the climber after his friends reported him missing to officials when they didn't hear from him.
At 4 p.m. on Friday, another hiker found him at the cabin and was able to contact climbing rangers.
The climber was later airlifted to a hospital.
