Raiders fire head coach Dennis Allen

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- ESPN confirms the Oakland Raiders have fired head coach Dennis Allen.

Allen had a 8-28 record over more than two season with the Raiders.

The decision was announced Monday night, soon after the Raiders (0-4) returned from London where they lost their 10th straight game dating to last season, 34-14 to the Miami Dolphins.

Allen was the first head coach hired by Oakland after the death of longtime owner Al Davis. His 8-28 record is the worst for the franchise since before Davis arrived in 1963.

Allen was a defensive minded coach, but his defense couldn't stop anyone and he went with rookie quarterback Derek Carr instead of proven veteran Matt Schaub as his quarterback and the results have been disastrous.

He is only the third coach in Raiders history to be fired during the season. The other two were Mike Shanahan in 1989 and Lane Kiffin in 2008.

The most likely candidate to replace him is offensive line coach Tony Sparano, who is the only coach on their staff with a contract for next season.

This is really not a surprise; GM Reggie McKenzie has talked owner Mark Davis out of this move previously, but if you're going to make a change, doing it in the bye week makes the most sense.

An announcement on the interim coach will come Tuesday.
