WASHINGTON (KGO) -- The head of the FDA is stepping down and will likely be replaced by someone with ties to the Bay Area.

Dr. Margaret Hamburg has been at the center of controversial decisions such as relaxing age restrictions on the Plan B contraceptive. She's decided to move on. Many reports say her deputy, Dr. Robert Califf, is the likely successor.

Califf did his residency at U.C. San Francisco.
