John Muir national historic site reopening to public in December 2017

MARTINEZ, Calif. (KGO) -- Nature lovers will soon be able to pay their respects to Sierra Club founder John Muir.

ABC 7 News visited Muir's resting place in Martinez Wednesday, it's been closed to visitors until recently.

The National Park Service says it will be opening the site to the public beginning one week from Saturday, December 2, 2017.

Muir is buried in a family plot with his wife, children and in-laws. It's about 5 minutes from the John Muir National Historic Site -- located in the woods, next to a creek.

To visit, you'll need to take a shuttle. There will be three park service tours a week beginning December 9th.
