Whimsical animal sculptures by Taiwanese artist brighten Civic Center

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A new public art exhibit is brightening up San Francisco.

A "Fancy Animal Carnival" was officially unveiled in San Francisco's Civic Center. It features 19 animals painted in bright colors with cartoonish figures.

They are the work of Taiwanese artist Hung Yi.

People immediately flocked to take pictures of the whimsical animals Tuesday. Some even placed coins on the money frog. The animals all carry a symbol in Taiwanese culture.

"Art is an international language that more and more people appreciate because it brings us together," said San Francisco mayor Ed Lee during the official unveiling Tuesday.

Yi made a special sculpture just for San Francisco. It features a buffalo with an eagle of peace on top. The figures will be on display in front of City Hall until May 2.
