San Jose pedestrian hospitalized after being hit by Uber driver

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- An Uber driver on his way to pick up a passenger hit a pedestrian on Tully Road near Senter Road in San Jose. The pedestrian, described as a man in his 60s, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews responded to the scene just before 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday. Police say it appears the pedestrian wasn't in a crosswalk. The Uber driver says he stepped in front of his car.

Uber only confirmed it was a partner driver and no passenger was in the car. They didn't have any other comment.

The investigation took about four hours to complete.

The Uber driver was on his way to pick up a passenger in his Toyota Prius when he hit the pedestrian

"The driver indicated that he was travelling in the westbound direction when the pedestrian stepped out in front of him. And he didn't have time to avoid the collision," explained Lt. Brian Matchett with the San Jose Police Department.

The driver stayed at the scene and talked with police. The Toyota's windshield was shattered.

Police are trying to figure out if there was anything the driver could have done to avoid the pedestrian.

This is the second pedestrian fatality in San Jose.
