VIDEO: What happens after a president is elected

WASHINGTON (KGO) -- A new President of the United States is selected on Election Day, but it doesn't mean that the new President-elect is automatically in charge.

Election Day only reveals the results of the popular vote, which doesn't officially choose the winner.

The winner is chosen after a minimum of 270 votes from the Electoral College.

Electors cast their vote in December and Congress counts the votes in early January.

In the meantime, the current President continues to hold office as the transition of power begins.

The transition period runs from Election Day to Inauguration Day on January 20.

During this time, the President-elect designates new government personnel, even if the electoral vote hasn't been finalized.

At noon on January 20th, the incoming President takes the oath of office, and offically begins their term.
