AMBER Alert cancelled after abducted child found

AMBER Alert issued for 5-year-old Johnnie Melendez, who was taken from National City in San Diego County.

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- A child at the center of an AMBER Alert issued Sunday morning has been found safe and sound.

The CHP activated the alert at the request of the National City Police Department in San Diego County.

Officials say they received a call around 2:34 a.m. Sunday about a child abduction from the Sweetwater Inn. Police say the father of 5-year-old Johnnie Melendez Jr. returned to the hotel and discovered that the boy and his mother, 27-year-old Gladys Suarez, along with all of their belongings were gone. After searching for about an hour and a half, the father called police.

According to police, the mother called Johnnie's father to tell him that he will never see the child again.

Suarez contacted the Los Angeles Sheriff's Station in Lancaster after seeing the AMBER Alert.

The boy was found at a residence in Lancaster and recovered unharmed.

National City police detectives are on their way to Lancaster to take Suarez into custody on charges of kidnapping.
