HIROSHIMA, Japan (KGO) -- An unusual contest took place in Japan, pitting babies against each other to see who will cry first.

Participants believe the loud cry of a baby will ward off evil spirits and bring healthy growth.

About 800 babies, aged 6 to 18 months, took part.

The babies were placed face-to-face in a sumo ring, and the one who cried first was the winner.

Some babies burst into tears before their bout began, while a few remained blissfully unaware of what was happening.
