MONTEREY BAY, Calif. (KGO) -- Monterey boaters are being warned to keep their distance from humpback whales and other marine wildlife feeding near shore.

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary staff has received reports of vessels, including paddleboards and kayaks, moving too close and putting themselves and the wildlife at risk.

Sanctuary officials advise boaters to stay at least 100 yards away from the protected species. They warn those who injure or harass the humpbacks will be fined.
