Full of voters, Santa Clara County Registrar evacuated due to burnt toast

SAN JOSE, California. (KGO) -- The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters was evacuated during voting on Tuesday after a fire alarm went off.

Hundreds of people were evacuated due to some burnt toast in the break room.

Minor incident aside, people are delivering a big turnout on election day at the Santa Clara County registrar of voters office.

Officials believe they could threaten to break the all time voter turnout record of 86 percent, set back in 2008.

Workers have gotten a jump on tallying the vote. They hope to have all early ballots counted and ready to report by the time the polls close Tuesday at 8p.m.

It was all smiles for Patricia Mance after she cast her vote, but preparing for the longest ballot in Santa Clara County history wasn't easy.

"It was stressful, so you have to make these decisions on these measures and read about it," said Mance, who resides in Milpitas. "It took a week to make the decision. This is so important."

And then there's the Jain family: Amit and Swati became citizens on Oct. 25.

"Me and my wife both became citizen on the same day," Amit said.

When asked how he was feeling about the process he said, "Very excited...this is the time now to vote and say something."
