Levee breach displaces more than 20 Hollister residents

HOLLISTER, Calif. (KGO) -- In Hollister, people who live near Pacheco Creek are evacuating again, after a levee breach widened.

Because of Friday's flooding, people had to flee their homes for a second time in two weeks.

"Approximately 21 to 22 residences, 22 homes, that were directly affected by the flooding," said Louie Valdez of the Office of Emergency Services. "Those residents were evacuated."

Some people had to be rescued. The problem was two-fold. Rain sent the river over its banks.

"The original levee that did break was widened," said Valdez. "It doubled approximately in size."

At the height of the evacuations, about 20 people took shelter at the veterans memorial building in Hollister, including children.

"We brought some toys in, and the kids are having a good time, but everybody's kind of quiet," said Red Cross volunteer Tom Tanner.

The red cross will be providing cots for anyone who needs to spend the night, and it's an uncertain night ahead.

"With additional rain, it's almost impossible to predict how much further the affected area will grow to be," said Valdez.
