SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The search is on for a group of at least 10 teenage attackers who beat and robbed a woman while she rode on a Muni bus Wednesday.

As the 5 Fulton followed its usual path westbound, something terrible happened to a woman sitting alone near one of the exit doors -- a group of teenagers, four boys and six girls attacked her.

"The victim was struck about six times in the head," said San Francisco police officer Grace Gatpandan. "And the juveniles stole her wallet, cards, and various cash."

The bus driver called police. Officers finally caught up with the bus and interviewed the victim, but the suspects were long gone. They got off at McAllister and Filmore streets.

"That's a really terrible thing that happened," said Muni rider Debra Salan. "I'm surprised to hear about it."

But other regular 5 Fulton riders aren't too shocked by it.

"I'm not too surprised to hear about it because people are pretty rowdy on the bus anyway," said Shekhiynah Larks, who also rides Muni.

When asked if she felt safe on Muni, Larks replied, "no."

"Over the last 2 years we've seen some of the lowest numbers with passenger incidents on Muni, so these incidents are rare and it is getting better," said Paul Rose of the SFMTA.

SFMTA has handed over surveillance video of the entire attack to police. They're not sharing it with the public just yet because the suspects are all minors.
