Parents camp out for child care program in South San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Many parents camped out overnight in South San Francisco to grab a coveted spot in a childcare program. The frenzy highlights some of the challenges of living in the Bay Area.

The program director said they have increased the size of these programs every year, but they can't keep up with the demand. This is the third year parents have stood outside all night to get spots.

The craziness of camping out and the exhaustion from doing it can bring out some strong emotions.

"These are our kids, this is our future. This is what we have to do," said Noel Manaig, parent.

Parents spent a very cold night on the sidewalk in South San Francisco to try and grab one of 40 open spots for a before and after school care program for their kids. But camping out did not guarantee success.

"I am now number 7 on the waitlist after camping out for almost 24 hours," said Larry Barillo, parent.

One single mom said she couldn't camp out and leave her kids at home, so she paid a woman $250 to camp out for her.

"It is well worth it for me because like I said I am a single parent so I can't pick up my son at 1 p.m." said Eve Kwan, parent.

Program directors speculate the need for childcare is going up as more parents head to the workplace to afford living here. Those who got a spot say a huge burden has been lifted form their shoulders.

"Instead of trying to figure out who is going to pick up the kids and who is going watch them because we are at work. It is a relief it is a great relief," said Manaig.

The program director said they do not have enough classroom space or qualified teachers to accommodate all of the children who need after school care.
