One homeowner tried to put the flames out with a garden hose.

"It went up quickly, we tried to control it with water but too high," said Carlos Lopez, homeowner.

"We rolled up and the house was on fire. It was crazy. Thank god it didn't burn it down," said Patrick Lair, homeowner.

Gusty winds quickly pushed the fire across 40 acres, burning an abandoned building at a sports complex. Flames spread to Travis Air Force Base where firefighters finally extinguished it.

The cause is being investigated.
