SAN BRUNO, Calif. (KGO) -- A carjacking suspect has been hospitalized after he was shot by San Francisco police Sunday morning near San Francisco International Airport. Authorities say it happened around 7 a.m. after the man committed a bizarre series of crimes.

The series of events leading up to the shooting began at SFO's Long-Term Parking Lot. It escalated onto San Bruno Avenue and even the exit ramp to Highway 101 where the suspect reportedly told police to shoot him during a confrontation.

One victim spoke to police investigators about a scary encounter with the carjacking suspect. Minutes earlier, officials said the man crashed a white Toyota on South Airport Boulevard. The car was stolen from the SFO Long-Term Parking Lot and belonged to a woman running the San Francisco Marathon.

Witnesses say they saw the driver leave the scene carrying a backpack. Chief Greg Suhr says a police officer stopped the man.

"When the officer asked the suspect to place the backpack down the suspect ran," he said.

He ran west on San Bruno Avenue and police say he attempted to carjack the driver of a red Honda when officers ordered the driver to stop.

"The driver is then threatened, he can hear the original suspect telling the driver to drive, the driver refuses, the suspect then bails back out of the car," Suhr said.

Police say the suspect ran onto the Highway 101 exit ramp and tried to carjack other drivers but failed.

An officer says he ordered the carjacker to stop, but instead he says the suspect turned and started moving toward police.

"One shot is fired, it does not strike suspect, the suspect continues to come at the officer, one of the other officers can hear the suspect saying, 'shoot me, shoot me, shoot me.' A second round is fired, it strikes the suspect in what appears to be the abdomen," Suhr said.

Police say the suspect was unarmed and still carrying a backpack. He remains in the hospital in stable condition.
