LANCASTER, Calif. (KGO) -- The superintendent of the East Side Union School District is apologizing for mistakenly releasing employee Social Security numbers to the Bay Area News Group.

The superintendent says the district was responding to a public records request and accidentally included the Social Security numbers.

Superintendent Chris Funk issued a statement to ABC7 News saying, "The Bay Area News Group immediately informed us of our mistake and destroyed the file."

The district is offering a year's worth of free identity theft protection to employees.
