OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Thursday night firefighters spent hours mopping up after a three-alarm fire near Mills College in Oakland.

At least three homes have burned in the 4700 block of Redding Street. First reports of the blaze came in at 7:40 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find a two-story home with flames coming from the top floor. It soon spread to surrounding buildings. The fire was contained around 9 p.m.

Homeowner Jason Smith said he is just thankful that his family is safe. He said, "I think my son and my wife are devastated. I'm devastated of course, but you know, my family got out safe and I've got them, so I don't have a house right now, but you can rebuild that. So, we're OK."

The fire brought down a power line that landed on one of the fire trucks.

There were no injuries and the cause of fire is under investigation.
