MARTINEZ, Calif. (KGO) -- A pier on the Carquinez Strait in Martinez burned ferociously overnight. Firefighters say the stubborn flames were tough to get to.

The flames could be seen from miles away. The fire was burning underneath and between the large wooden posts. The structure was once a ferry terminal. Firefighters did not have a fireboat to attack the flames.

Boats are docked about 100 feet from the fire and marine traffic has not been impacted. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The historic bridge is off limits to the public as firefighters evaluate the integrity of the structure.
