Gas leak capped after causing evacuations in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Calif. -- A construction crew hit a 1-inch plastic service line in Lafayette this morning, causing a gas leak that prompted evacuations and a street closure, PG&E and police officials said.

At 9:39 a.m., PG&E officials received a report of the gas leak happening near Golden Gate Way and Mt. Diablo Boulevard, PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said.

PG&E officials arrived at the scene by about 10 a.m. and were able to stop the flow of gas by 10:24 a.m., according to Sarkissian.

Crews were working late this morning on repairing the service line and hoped to have it fixed by noon, Sarkissian said.

Nearby buildings had been evacuated as a result of the leak, but those evacuations have since been lifted, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials.

Mt. Diablo Boulevard is open, while Golden Gate Way remains closed, fire officials said.

There have been no reports of any injuries, according to fire officials.

PG&E advises people to call 811 before starting any outdoor project that involves digging.

The free service will arrange for a utility person to arrive at the dig site within 48 hours of the request to check if there is a service line in the area, according to Sarkissian.
