SAN FRANCISCO -- Buildings in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley neighborhood have been evacuated Monday morning after a car crashed into a building, causing a gas leak, according to a PG&E spokesman.

The crash and severed gas line were reported around 10:15 a.m. in the 300 block of Argonaut Avenue, PG&E spokesman Jason King said.

Emergency responders and PG&E crews arrived on scene a short time later to ensure that gas was venting safely from the broken line, King said.

Fire crews evacuated nearby buildings, but King said the gas leak should be capped and evacuations lifted a short time after 11 a.m.

Repairs were expected to take most of the day, he said.

Information about what caused the car crash was not immediately available.
