RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Commonwealth University has told students to resume their normal activity after warning them to avoid part of its campus because of a possible armed person.

At about 11 a.m. Friday, the school posted an alert telling students that it had not been able to find an armed man after a search.

Earlier Friday, the school sent a series of alerts saying a man wearing a "square, military-style hat" and a backpack was seen around campus.

James Mercante, a spokesman for the Richmond Police department, says police received a call of a possible armed person heading toward campus just before 10 a.m.

Mercante says police responded and did not find anyone matching that description.

He added that it is "perfectly legal" in Virginia to carry a weapon openly.
