This Hayward neighborhood doesn't have a good reputation, even with the people who live here.

"There are some shady people that live around here," said Leilani Valentino, Hayward resident.

"You don't even want to come outside at night when the sun goes down. You know what I mean?" said mike, Hayward resident.

Hayward police say a husband and wife were walking near the intersection of Florida Street and Dolphin Lane at about 11:45 Tuesday night when a man with a gun and demanded their phones. Mike lives right at that spot.

"We heard a commotion outside and then a large bang and then a car spill off. Then the lady ran to my door asking if I'd call 911 because they stole her phone," said Mike.

Police say the robber shot the husband before hopping into a vehicle and taking off.

"I came outside and the guy was laying on the lawn outside and I gave him a towel blanket and called ambulance for them," said Mike.

The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police are planning on interviewing the victims today to try to get more information and will see if there was any confrontation that led to the robber firing his gun.

"It's a piece of it's a piece of property. It can be replaced. Your life can't be," said Hayward police department Sgt. Ryan Cantrell.

Police describe the suspect's vehicle as a candy apple red SUV with gold rims. If you have any information call Hayward police.
