Police searching for suspect after 2 shot in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- Berkeley police are looking for the gunman who opened fire on a man and a women as they sat in a car overnight. The two are critically injured. It happened on Tremont Street about a block from the Ashby BART station.

The shots were fired around 1 a.m. One of the victims set out onto Prince Street looking for help.

"I heard about four to five gunshots I looked out my front door and saw a guy limping up the street," said Tony Hill, Berkeley resident.

A man and a woman sitting inside a car on Tremont Street were shot. They both survived, but are in critical condition. Berkeley police say it looks like they were targeted.

"At this point it is unclear as to the motive of the shooting, but it does not appear random," said Berkeley Police Sgt. Andrew Frankel.

The car has Uber and Lyft stickers in the window; police will not say if the shooting was related to the driving services.

This happened right next to the Ashby BART station. As people arrived to the station this morning, they were shocked to see the crime tape and police.

"This neighborhood is quiet. People park cars here to go to the BART station, so it's surprising someone shot while sitting in car," said Lawanda Mallory, Oakland resident.

Police have not made any arrests and do not have a description of the gunman.
