SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Protesters around the country marched in an effort to get President Donald Trump to release his taxes.

A crowd assembled on Market Street in San Francisco for the march, stretching five blocks. They had a simple message with a popular mascot - the chicken.

"The chicken mask is because Donald Trump is afraid to show his taxes. He's a chicken," Oakland resident Heidi Miller said.

The demonstration was one of many across the country. It's part of an effort to pressure President Donald Trump to release his taxes, or to encourage Congress to force him to do it.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says it's the people protecting the president who have to change.

"It's not of question of him. It's a question of how long the Republicans in Congress will protect him. They're the ones who can vote to make it happen," Pelosi said.

She was the key note speaker at the pre-march event in front of city hall.

It was an event that included a massive inflatable chicken - with copper hair. The symbolism was pretty obvious.

Supervisor Jane Kim didn't pull any punches when criticizing President Trump. "I'm not afraid to call Donald Trump an enemy of this state," Kim said.
