SAN FRANCISCO -- A man in San Francisco managed to walk out on his own after firefighters helped rescue him from a cliff by Mile Rock Beach.

The man called 9-1-1 for help just after 3 a.m. Police say he may have been assaulted.

Fire officials say he was lucky to be in an area accessible by foot because heavy fog and wind conditions would have made a rope rescue extremely difficult.

The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital.
