CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- One man is in the hospital and another is injured after a tree fell on their campground at Mount Diablo State Park. It happened Friday night around 10:30 p.m.

The man who was injured returned to the campsite on Saturday to pack up his belongings. He told ABC7 News his friend had a head injury and was still in the hospital.

The men were with their families, including children, who were not injured.

People camping nearby described what they heard when the accident happened.

"We were sleeping in the tent and then we heard some crackling and thought, 'What's that crackling? Fireworks? Fourth of July?' And then it just started crashing and then a loud boom," witness Pamela Davis said.

One man had a back injury and he went to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The other man was airlifted to a nearby hospital after receiving a head injury.

"I was like really scared because I didn't know what happened," 12-year-old Jason Bolfango said.

"I start seeing more lights flashing and then the rangers come walking up and then there's an ambulance there," Vallejo resident Jeff Russell said.

Park officials say environmental experts will come from Sacramento to get a better look at the tree and investigate why a portion of it fell down.

Aside from the area taped off, the rest of the park remains open.
