Witnesses horrified by Mill Valley road rage incident

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- A violent road rage incident took place in Mill Valley. A brutal beating was so severe witnesses thought the victim might die. Now a tech entrepreneur is accused of taking that confrontation too far.

It happened at the intersection of East Blithedale and Camino Alto in Mill Valley.

Mill Valley police have charged a Marin County tech executive with felony assault after they say he beat a man in a fit of road rage. Jeff Smock, 40, was booked in the Marin County Jail and has since bailed out.

Police are saying this is still an active investigation. Once they complete their report they will present the case to the da for possible felony charges.

Some bicyclists say there needs to be some sort of better system or better bike lanes especially along East Blithedale Avenue and Camino Alto, where narrow lanes make it difficult for cyclists and cars to share the road. Police say that is where that a fight between a driver and a cyclist led to one man being arrested and the other badly beaten.

"I think that there should be bike lanes and they should be huge and we should be protected," said cyclist Janna Bucsis.

Mill Valley police say they arrested Smock on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon, but they would not tell us what weapon was used.

Police say Smock got off of his bike and beat the 55-year-old driver of a pick-up truck so severely, witnesses could only watch in stunned disbelief. Cops arrived to find a man covered in blood.

We tried to speak with Smock at his residence, but we were told he wasn't home and our calls were not returned.

Police have not identified the beaten man, but a friend of the victim tells ABC7 News he is home from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries.

Mill Valley police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the fight or captured video call police.
