NEW ZEALAND -- A police dog missing for seven days in the New Zealand wilderness has been reunited with his handler.

The K-9 named Thames went missing during a Search and Rescue training exercise on the tops of the Tararua Ranges.

The 4-year-old German shepherd was found Sunday afternoon after search crews discovered a fresh paw print in the mud.

After a few whistles from his handler, Constable Mike Wakefield, Thamas was finally spotted.

"He wolfed down half of my salami, which is a treat for him," Wakefield said. "I gave him a cuddle and we had a big play. I was just lost for words."

"We are absolutely delighted at the news and Mike is ecstatic," Senior Sergeant Mark Davidson of the Wellington Police Dog Section said.

Thames will be taken to a veterinarian to be checked out. Both Thamas and Wakefield will be on their annual leave for few weeks off before heading back on duty.

"We can't wait," Wakefield said. "It's great to have Thames come home. The response from colleagues, the SAR and civilian volunteers and the support from members of the public has been amazing. I can't thank people enough."
