SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The next "big one" in the Bay Area may actually be a cluster of powerful earthquakes.

Quake researchers now say it's more likely that the region will experience a flurry of mid-sized earthquakes, rather than one giant earthquake.

Researchers now think future quakes will spread out along faults across California.

The Mercury News reports that scientists based their prediction on historical record which showed a cluster of earthquakes shook the Bay Area from 1690 to 1776.
