SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Five people were rescued from a 2-alarm apartment fire in San Francisco's Mission District Tuesday morning, fire officials say.

SFFD responded to the fire in the area of 21st and Valencia Streets around 6 a.m. It's a 3-story residential building over commercial businesses on the first floor.

SF Fire says firefighters rescued the five people from inside and on the fire escape. Three of those five people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Eight people are also displaced from the fire and the Red Cross is being called to assist.

The fire was contained around 7 a.m. after 70 firefighters responded. Officials say it is under investigation.
