A Michigan father is ringing in the new year with some good fortune after winning $300,000 from a scratch ticket given to him by his kids.

The father, who chose to remain anonymous, received the $5 Holiday Ice scratch ticket as a Christmas gift and won the maximum $300,000 jackpot. The ticket had been purchased by his children at a gas station in Jackson, Mich.

According to the Michigan Lottery, the lucky dad claimed his winnings on Monday, still in a state of astonishment from his good fortune.

The dad isn't planning to keep all his winnings for himself. While he intends to help his family with the money, he said he's going to thank his children by sending them on a nice spring break trip.

The Michigan father isn't the only person who won big from the lottery this holiday season. In St. Louis, a group of postal workers won a $1 million lottery prize on Dec. 19, and in California, lottery officials are still waiting to award $27 million to the person who purchased a matching SuperLotto Plus ticket in Hermosa Beach for the Dec. 26 drawing.
