Prowlers break into San Jose State University sorority house
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The search is on in San Jose for a pair of prowlers who broke into a sorority house overnight. One of the women woke up and found the men in her room.
The suspects got inside through an unlocked sliding glass door at the back of the sorority and went room to room and stole what they could.
The doors of Kappa Delta are locked up tight Tuesday night after two men walked in, rummaged through rooms, and started stealing.
San Jose State University students aren't due back from winter break until the end of the month. Only six girls are currently staying at the sorority. One woke up while the prowlers were in her room stealing her laptop. The then suspects ran away.
"Any crime is serious. We take the safety of our students very seriously," said SJSU olice Capt. Frank Belcastro.
No one from the sorority would talk about the break-ins, but those living in neighboring fraternities did.
"It's kind of worrisome that someone would have the audacity to break into a house that is quiet, nobody is bothering anyone," said Princeton Poe, a SJSU student said.
"First time I've heard that a sorority has been broken into like that," said a SJSU fraternity member.
But longtime downtown residents aren't surprised by this.
"It's very busy, very crazy, it's dangerous at night time," said Ray Abrue, a downtown San Jose resident. "Got break ins everywhere, with cars, stolen stuff like that."
On Christmas, thieves also stole lap tops from a group of San Jose State students living off campus. They ransacked their apartment and took presents from under their tree.
Campus police are checking with San Jose detectives to see if the same ones are responsible for both crimes.
