Real-life superheroes rappel from rooftop to help children fight addiction

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Some real-life superheroes braved the rain and 26 stories to help children fight drug and alcohol addiction.

Nearly 100 people scaled down from the rooftop of the San Jose Marriott after a slight rain delay Tuesday afternoon for the Shatterproof Challenge.

Organizers hope the event will raise awareness and help bridge the gap between funding and resources for children battling addiction.

"And change the dialogue. This is a disease, it's not moral character. It's not a bad choice. This is chronic brain disease and needs to be treated as such," Shatterproof founder Gary Mendell said.

This is the second year for the Shatterproof Challenge in San Jose. It's raised $1.5 million since last year's event.
