What Really Matters: More than Just a Game
Dan Ashley turns his weekly commentary to the Super Bowl and why it means so much.

The Bay Area is the epicenter of Super Bowl fever.

Super Bowl City, right next to the Ferry Building in San Francisco, is a much busier place as fans begin to pour into the city in large numbers.

The ABC7 News team is providing such extensive coverage, not because the game is on our network - which it's not - and not because it's the biggest sporting event the country - which it is.

We're doing all of this because it's so much bigger than a game.

Super Bowl Sunday has become almost a national holiday. Family and friends get together. And there are special snacks and special meals, like we do on holidays like Thanksgiving.

Perhaps 140 million people will be tuned in across the country to watch the game, regardless of who's playing and, of course, the commercials.

But beyond the spectacle is what really matters - the shared experience of an event that unites us and excites us in a uniquely American way.

Enjoy the game and, most importantly, the day.

Each week, ABC7 News Anchor Dan Ashley offers commentary on the important issues affecting people where you live.
