David Long commits to Michigan after Jim Harbaugh visit

ESPN 300 athlete David Long, the No. 104-ranked prospect in the 2016 class, has committed to Michigan. Long announced his decision Thursday on ESPNU, picking Michigan over Washington.

The name might sound familiar.

Just a few days before the announcement, Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh attempted to climb a tree at Long's house during an in-home visit.

"He was playing catch with my little brother, and my little sister asked if he could climb the tree," Long said Thursday. "He never actually got up."

Long had been going back and forth between the Wolverines and Huskies and came to a decision shortly after Harbaugh's visit. He described his recruitment by Harbaugh as "crazy."

"You know, he's a really loose guy," Long said. "He's one of the most loose coaches out there. A lot of people think that he's [going] overboard by what he's doing, but I think that's just him. He's a really laid-back guy.

"I think that's just a part of his personality."

Long had been a Stanford commit before opening up his recruitment Dec. 18, ultimately focusing on the final two schools.

The No. 5-ranked athlete in the class, Long gives Michigan 11 ESPN 300 commitments, which is second in the Big Ten to Ohio State (12). The Wolverines currently have the No. 5 class for 2016 with 22 total commitments.

Long said he will be used as a cornerback by Michigan and might see some snaps on offense and special teams.

He said he expects that a national championship is not far off for the Wolverines.

"Next year, you know, and if not, the year after that," he said. "Big things are coming to Ann Arbor."
