Former Oakland Raiders assistant coach Charlie Sumner has died at the age of 84.

He died Friday in Maui from complications following gall bladder surgery, his son Colin told the Bay Area News Group.

"The Raiders are deeply saddened by the news of Charlie Sumner's passing," the Raiders said in a statement released Monday by the team. "Charlie was an esteemed part of the Raider family and was instrumental in some of the Silver and Black's greatest triumphs. Our deepest sympathies are with Charlie's family at this time."

Sumner had three stints as a Raiders defensive assistant, including being the defensive coordinator in 1984 when the then-Los Angeles Raiders won Super Bowl XVIII.

Sumner, who first coached in Oakland as defensive backs coach in 1963, was last with the Raiders in the 1989 season.
